The Apple Watch is just starting to get a little smarter again this fall thanks to watchOS 5. The latest update introduces numerous improvements, including some that Apple did not show during the keynote.
watchOS 5 functions that you did not know
During WWDC 2018, Apple focused on watchOS 5 on two things: activity and communication. Yet the update introduces more than that this autumn. Thanks to the first beta, the small watchOS 5 features that Apple has brought to the smartwatch have now been discovered.
1. Control panel Adjustment and usage is easier
With a simple swipe across the screen, open the Apple Watch Control Panel. Over the years, more and more functions have been added to this, which now provides an abundance of small icons. From watchOS 5 you can organize these buttons yourself. For example, place the flashlight on top if you use it often, or place the waterproof mode below if you never take a dive with the Watch on your wrist.
2. New colour for Siri Dial
The Siri Dial that introduced watchOS 4 will be upgraded with watchOS 5. From now on, third-party apps can also be shown on this clock, making it instantly more useful. In addition, the dial gets a new grey colour to choose from.
3. Adjustments for dials
Another small watchOS 5 improvement has to do with the Solar dial. From now on, it will receive two Complications, so that you can put away small versions of your favourite watchOS apps. Handy if you use this dial often and make it more functional in this way.
4. Weather app more functional
The weather app now lets you know the UV index and wind speed. The prediction for the next ten days is also easier to see: you simply scroll down in the weather app or turn the Digital Crown to see what the weather will look like for the next ten days.
5. New wifi settings
From now on you can switch from Wi-Fi to the network with which the watch is connected. Up to watchOS 5, your Watch was connected to the same network as your iPhone, without giving you the option to show available other networks. In the settings you can - just like on an iPhone - view a list of all the networks within range.
6. New Emoji selector in Messages
Writing out entire messages on the small screen of the Apple Watch is not convenient, but quickly choosing an emoji and sending it back is, of course, a possible and easy way to do. Apple also has that in mind, and from this autumn there is, therefore, a brand new emoji voter present. This shows which emoji you use often and place the rest in categories.
7. Do Not Disturb features iOS 12 also in watchOS 5
iOS 12 will do its best to distract you less with notifications and other ways in which apps try to claim your attention. Fortunately, all these measures are also being implemented on the Watch. In this way, notifications, calls and other notifications are blocked immediately if you switch on Do Not Disturb on your iPhone.
