It took a while, but with the release of iOS 11.4 AirPlay 2 is finally available. AirPlay 2 was announced last year on 5 June during the WWDC. It was very important for Apple to release the function before the upcoming WWDC 2018 event starts.

AirPlay 2 multiroom audio

AirPlay 2 in iOS 11.4 enables multiroom audio and HomePod stereo pairs. You can ask Siri to play music over different speakers in various rooms in your house. And then there are some small improvements. For example, the music is no longer interrupted when you answer a call.

Currently, Apple's own HomePod speaker is the only one that still supports AirPlay 2. In the Netherlands, HomePod is not yet available, on June 18 you can buy it in Germany or France. Apple has now released a list of AirPlay 2 speakers and receivers. They will provide the necessary support in the future.

The manufacturers themselves still have to provide an update of their speakers. Sometimes this happens in the form of a regular software update. Naim, Libratone and Sonos have already agreed to do this. In other cases, it only works if you buy a new speaker.

We will update all the news regarding the speaker devices which supports AirPlay 2 in the future. Stay tuned to our website for more information on this.
